Hasbro Retains the Rights to Marvel Toys and Games Through 2017
Filed under: Comic-based Movies, Marvel Collectibles, Toy
Marvel.com has an article announcing that Hasbro will retain the rights to make Marvel toys and games through 2017. This includes the rights to the merchandise from upcoming movies released by Marvel and Columbia Pictures, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Avengers, X-Men, Thor, and Captain America.
As part of the new agreement (the current agreement runs through 2011), Hasbro will continue to hold the global rights (excluding Japan) to develop products based on Marvel’s globally-known universe of more than 5,000 characters and Spider-Man Merchandising’s film and television properties in a wide range of toy and game categories, including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles. The new agreement covers both the “classic” comic book look of the characters as well as product lines inspired by television and films.
–snip snip–
In 2009, Hasbro is bringing to market a line of products based on the upcoming May 1 release of the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as well as great classic lines behind Spider-Man, Iron Man, Super Hero Squad & the Marvel Universe. Hasbro is also planning product and marketing programs based on several upcoming releases like Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America, and The Avengers.
This is great news for my son, who loves Hasbro’s Super Hero Squads and Mighty Muggs. However, Hasbro’s line of Marvel Legends figures has left many in the comic collectibles community less than impressed. What’s your take?

With the final issue of Secret Invasion out this week, lots of Secret Invasion goodies on the web. Obviously, there are lots of spoilers. So if you haven’t read it yet, read on at your own risk.
First, Comic Book Resources gives a 3 (out of 5) star review, where reviewer Benjamin Birdie compares Secret Invasion #8 to the New York Knicks, Die Hard, and Top Chef. In a nutshell, he found Secret Invasion a little disappointing, but is excited about the future.
Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog wasn’t quite as impressed. Definitely check out his hilarious Secret Invasion in 30 Seconds.
Unsurprisingly, Secret Invasion writer Brian Michael Bendis is making the interview rounds. Comic Book Resources has an interview where Bendis gives an in-depth analysis of issue #8. Over at Wizard Universe, Bendis provides a director’s commentary for the issue. And Marvel has a podcast where Bendis wraps up Secret Invasion and teases Dark Reign.
Finally, Marvel has released their upcoming Dark Reign solicitations.
